<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I started this blog post as a social media post and very quickly worked out that this topic deserves a longer discussion than just a few sentences thrown out into social media space. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Slow Fashion for us is an extension of the Slow Food movement and is part of the reason we love living where we do, the Central West of NSW. This area is known as a "food basket" and is very aptly named with volcanic soils it is perfect for growing food. We love to buy our food as locally as possible and know who grew it whenever possible. For example we buy our fruit from our neighbour, our orange juice comes from Narromine, meat from our own property and our local butcher that has their own farms and our dairy products from The Little Big Dairy in Dubbo. It's part of what makes our community circle. We find community isn't just limited to a geographical area but more about the people and businesses you know and understand.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHlNIGueJFNc4NuyZE4I4Dm-lJVlrNeUBlAE1Jphgp_hsdq2rIdF-cwoRsia7326n6FMvxTIxrAqo038xStn85gyEpr4EHOYe9hpl-ARqpolU9yEddCnjVdN2W9qF0-KFUDARl4xmLO6A/s1600/IMG_2965.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHlNIGueJFNc4NuyZE4I4Dm-lJVlrNeUBlAE1Jphgp_hsdq2rIdF-cwoRsia7326n6FMvxTIxrAqo038xStn85gyEpr4EHOYe9hpl-ARqpolU9yEddCnjVdN2W9qF0-KFUDARl4xmLO6A/s320/IMG_2965.jpg" width="240" /></a><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It is not always possible to be able to make these choices or even have the information to make these choices but I am a firm believer that in making small choices wherever you can it can make a difference.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Extending these choices from Slow Food to Slow Fashion becomes even more difficult as so much of our manufacturing is now done overseas. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Wikipedia definition of Slow Fashion is </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_fashion" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><i><b style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Slow fashion</b><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">, the alternative to </span><span style="color: #0b0080;"><span style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255);">fast fashion</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> and part of what has been called the "</span><span style="color: #0b0080;"><span style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255);">slow movement</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">", advocates for principles similar to the principles of </span><span style="color: #0b0080;"><span style="background: none rgb(255, 255, 255);">slow food</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">, such as good quality, clean environment, and fairness for both consumers and producers.</span></i></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBOgkE6OYA5zzjXCheZPVpsqPy-WRnXQHGhLwjJOBk0ciSm_YLf5ebmlP8w2_lY2dXK3VlcZd5NwnTprjSpPd3M4HdZ2FAl39FX7h1_-k1-Ppeu6An15r8G3HzqSyRg8sH1jJyHxNwvXw/s1600/IMG_5940.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBOgkE6OYA5zzjXCheZPVpsqPy-WRnXQHGhLwjJOBk0ciSm_YLf5ebmlP8w2_lY2dXK3VlcZd5NwnTprjSpPd3M4HdZ2FAl39FX7h1_-k1-Ppeu6An15r8G3HzqSyRg8sH1jJyHxNwvXw/s320/IMG_5940.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Fairness for both consumers and producers is a very important part of Slow Fashion. It touches on an overall responsibility for the whole process of manufacturing clothes. In fairness it needs to include suitable conditions for workers and the overall supply chain for the products, including the growers of the raw fibres. It needs to acknowledge that cost is a driving factor and that to survive the producer needs to be able to make a margin but I think it also includes a responsibility of the manufacturer to not undertake activities that the consumer would object to, such as polluting the environment or endangering team members. Transparency is not always able to be achieved but all consumers would object to buying something that takes advantage of people, damaged waterways or poisoned fish or animals. This is not to say that all manufacturing overseas does this but that we have lost the transparency and therefore also the accountability.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Sometimes it is all too easy to buy the multiples of cheap items available to us today and be so removed from the process that these factors are no longer real to us. We forget that it is the consumer that will drive the behavior of the producers. For so long cost has been the primary driving factor in purchase decisions for the vast majority of consumers so is it no wonder that the producers have found ways to give us what we are asking for? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdbGiH05eswqtsVdecVoX0epp4OwwE4uQsgV7wXUQvNH2GxZefGJuKWwuq7tRUH3d9buABYBZY69ngSrc4HAGjrYj8OjYvmMuVeEcpIYxQOn5tPveeYlf_uFIixbIUmrbba1ovzRSU_0g/s1600/IMG_3264.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdbGiH05eswqtsVdecVoX0epp4OwwE4uQsgV7wXUQvNH2GxZefGJuKWwuq7tRUH3d9buABYBZY69ngSrc4HAGjrYj8OjYvmMuVeEcpIYxQOn5tPveeYlf_uFIixbIUmrbba1ovzRSU_0g/s320/IMG_3264.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Australia can be proud that it has comparatively high labour rates however that makes it very difficult to run a manufacturing business. So when we are choosing to buy our "stuff" whether it be food, clothing, toys or otherwise we need to seriously consider buying something made ethically as well as something which will last. Or one day we will wake up and there will be nothing left being manufactured or grown here, rubbish tips will be full of disposed items and wonder why there are no more jobs (other than rehabilitation of tips) and a deteriorating community?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The reality even for us is that we have 3 small children, many costs in starting a new business and the same living costs as everyone else. So making ethical choices is hard. And is it not always clear what the ethical choice is. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I can't always buy from companies that I can trace their sources or even when I can trace I may not be able to afford their products but I strongly believe that the choices I do make will make a difference.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In addition to the small everyday choices that we make, we also made a very big choice. We started Adagio Mills. We can not describe how difficult this road has been. Until we lived this choice, whilst we knew about the difficulties and constraints on running a manufacturing business in Australia, it wasn't completely "real" to us. Paying our staff appropriately as well as all the other requirements such as super and worker's compensation is more difficult than we could have ever imagined. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Adagio Mills at the moment makes knitting yarn from natural fibres. We provide local, regional employment and are as environmentally friendly as we can be, even choosing to use the timeless qualities of the natural colours of the fibres instead of using dyes. We are regularly out and about in the community promoting this business and so many people come past us and give us a fantastic pat on the back. "We love what you do" they say or "We need more people like you" they say. Then walk away without buying anything. Not even a token ball of yarn to give as a present to someone. This is devastating to a business like ours. As much as we like the compliment and the words of support, we can't just pay our team compliments. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We have started our second crowdfunding campaign to generate interest and presales of garments to help us obtain a knitting machine. We hope that this will help us to expand our market and help us to be here for the future. <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1734445128/adagio-made-sustainable-slow-fashion-knitted-cloth?ref=1af5ln" target="_blank">If you would like to find our more about it there is more information at this link, we definitely need your help.</a> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So even if what we do doesn't necessarily appeal to you, please in your everyday choices, consider Slow Fashion and Slow Food. Make the small choices (or the large ones) that make a difference to farmers and other businesses local to you and help keep the community together.</span></div>

have noticed, or even been involved in, the Kickstarter campaign that we ran in
2015. We were backed by 200 backers and were successfully funded. We have a
lasting connection with our backers who have started the Adagio community. We
love meeting our Kickstarter backers in person when we have been out promoting
Adagio Mills and have loved to see what they made with their yarn
rewards. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

share with you the development of your garment from fleece through the whole
process until it is ready to wear. From the start we will bring you closer to
the farmers who grew the fleece then learn about how we make yarns. We will be
developing a special blend of merino and alpaca fleece into a superior yarn to
make your garment extra soft and cosy. You will receive exclusive insights on
the development of this yarn and its processing through our mill. This will
include videos and images of the processing of the yarn. The journey will then
continue with the ups and down of installing and learning to operate our new
knitting machine and knitting your rewards.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Like many small breeders or owners of alpacas in Australia it is shearing time! Its been rather warm here so I'm very pleased that they are now shorn as they will be much more comfortable. Watching alpacas interact before and after shearing is so interesting. How much fleece they grow seems to affect their status in the group and their own identity. After they are shorn they almost look bashful like they are wandering around with no clothes on! They also all have to re-greet everyone to figure out who is who as they all look different. I love how tiny they really are under their fleece! Here are some photos of our shearing session today.<br />

<br />
We often get asked for tips for small holders of alpacas for shearing time. Whilst the shearing process is the same for large breeders and small alike, not all small breeders or owners have nice shearing set-ups or the experience so shearing time can be quite stressful. Here are a few of our tips to make it easier!<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Have as many helpers on hand that you can, all with assigned jobs,</li>
<li>Have the alpacas ready before the shearer gets there,</li>
<li>Have different colour bags for the saddle fleece and the neck and leg fleece. We tend to use clear bags for the saddle and garbage bags for the neck and leg fleece,</li>
<li>Help the shearer collect the saddle fleece, whilst the shearer helps to separate the saddle from the rest, it will still need a second skirting and it is not their responsibility to do this for you,</li>
<li>Make sure none of the neck and leg fleece makes it into the bag with the saddle fleece or cross contaminates other fleeces,</li>
<li>When you write the name or designator of the alpaca on the bag, write the length of the fleece and any other comment you may have as well. Whilst the fleece may be obvious when it first goes in the bag after a few hours of shearing and a big pile of fleece in bags, it can all start to look alike and this might just save you from having to go back through everything, </li>
<li>Length is very important for processing, only fleece 70-140mm is processable and 90-110mm produces the best results,</li>
<li>What do we do with the neck and leg fleece? Unless you have a top breeding alpaca, generally the the neck and leg fleece is too short and hairy for processing however it makes wonderful fertiliser for your veggie patch!</li>
</ul>
<div>
Hope that helps!</div>

We have just launched our first call for design submissions!<br />
<br />
Do you have an idea for a knit or crochet design that would showcase the Adagio Mills yarns?<br />
<br />
Adagio Mills is looking for independent knit and crochet designers who would like to work with us to develop patterns for our yarns.<br />
<br />
<br />
We have some very exciting opportunities for launching patterns coming up, including a fashion show and we would love to share the experience with a few indie designers.<br />

We have been working on a few projects with Marie and Fred Lawson of the Crofter's Weaving Mill and their kind words and encouragement have often come at points of time that we really needed it. </div>
<div>
<br /><div>
Last week I arrived into the office to find the most wonderful package waiting for me. Marie had sent a beautiful shawl that they have made out of Adagio Mills 4ply yarns. They are loaning it us as a display piece. It is simply stunning. I was moved beyond words.</div>

The result is amazing.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today was a gorgeous foggy day. The kind where the fog is comforting and lifts all the colours whilst cloaking them in cloud. Perfect day for some craft. Fridays are precious in our household. After the madness of trying to fit as much work in the hours available earlier in the week and James at preschool, Fridays are my day with the boys where we have no commitments. Often there are the pile up of shopping, washing and other household chores but some days like today we ignore them all and we aim to have a quiet day doing preschooler things. As much as they are our dedicated day together, fridays can also often be tricky balancing work calls and James settling back into playing at home after all the entertainment of his preschool friends. So as much as I loved the beauty of the foggy day we definitely needed some planned craft today! With all my test knitting and crochet, James has become inquisitive and has wanted to do something with the yarns himself. After reading around various other blogs I have had a weaving project in mind for him for just such a rainy day event! As I suspected he was a little young yet to really get into it and the project was a little too big for him to finish but both boys thoroughly enjoyed the activity! Even Xavie did quite well with his weaving with a little help. After a few rows, and a good half an hour, James put his aside but he'll be back again I'm sure another day. </div>

Things have been the typical brand of chaos trying to keep everything running and improving at the mill and expand our network. We have been doing lots of travelling to markets to talk to as many people as possible and spread the word that we exist. The most wonderful thing is everywhere we go people find us to show what they have made or introduce themselves as one of our kickstarter backers. We are putting so much energy into making every single yarn that it is so uplifting to meet everyone and see what they have been inspired to make. Reminds us of why we are doing this on the tough days.</div>

</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have also been doing some pattern design experiments in the background. My current project started with some scraps of ends of runs of yarns and Xavie needing a beanie. He just love love loves hats. So when James started wearing his beanie, Xavie wanted one as well and started wearing mine! It was so cute, just kept falling over his eyes but he stubbornly insisted on wearing it! Everyone loves the sample tension strip of colours I have as a display piece and comment on how they'd like to have our rainbow. These various brainstorm ideas collided a few weeks ago and became a prototype Adagio Mills Rainbow Sampler beanie. A few friends and I are currently madly test knitting the various sizes and the mill is completing the missing colours we need for it in the hope that we will be able to release it as a project pack very very soon. Xavie is somewhat perplexed that I was knitting another beanie just like his today! He was just the happiest kid ever when I finished his beanie and he got to wear it in the cold last weekend just like the other bigger kids we had visiting for the weekend. He is so attached with it that during the day he always knows where it is and often includes it in his games as you can see it has been carted around with his blocks in his favourite truck today. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I can see many a picnic being enjoyed on this <br />blanket on our front lawn!</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Looking out into a paddock of alpacas and seeing the range of beautiful colours grazing to their hearts' content is something really special to behold. I have been trying to think of a way to share our love of the natural alpaca colours, they way they coordinate so beautifully together and hence also our vision for Adagio Mills yarns. The best way I have come up with so far is to start working on a project that has always been waiting to be made in the back of my mind for many years. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a child my mother had a granny square crochet blanket. One of the classic retro ones with the rainbow colours and black edging. I'm not even sure if she made it or one of her relatives (I really should ask!) but it was something that I loved to snuggle in. I have made a few false starts over the years but have now found the inspiration to start one in ernest. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the two ideas have collided and I've made a start on my granny square blanket. It's really rather perfect timing for this blanket, until we are really up and running, I can only really justify working with the scraps left over from Adagio Mills yarns and that is exactly what this project needs! It will also be a fantastic keepsake record of our first yarns.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My "paddock of alpacas" granny square blanket is already loved in our household. As soon as I pull the project bag out my two boys instantly drop what they are doing and run over to claim a square or two. I think I'm going to find a stack of them at the bottom of the toy boxes once the project has been finished! They rub the squares on their faces and run around with them with all the ends flying in the air. My eldest has already announced that its going on his bed. Well... we will see.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What colour is this yarn?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We have had such fun naming Adagio Mills Weathered Wood. Boring engineer me initially named it Black Fawn... (made sense to me!! black fibre and fawn fibre.. black fawn. easy!) However a family member pointed out that the yarn really wasn't black so that would be confusing. So that got us talking... We kept saying maybe its "grey" or "rose grey" or "bay black" or "brown" but each time we put it near a similar shade of the colour in question it wasn't that at all! We put the adjacent photo up on Instagram and Facebook to see if anyone could help us name this yarn appropriately! (yarn in question is at the base of the photo and middle of the top section with black, grey, rosegrey and brown clockwise from left) We had so many wonderful suggestions including tweed and tortoiseshell but eventually settled on weathered wood.<br />

Its also show to the right up against the railway sleepers that are my front doorstep! Just blends into our doorstep perfectly.<br />
<br />
We decided to make some 4 ply and 8 ply from this fibre. Mainly to find out what yarns people would like to use so we now have 4, 5 and 8 ply yarns available. So we will see how they go...<br />
<br />
We have also added a brown and fawn blend that we have called latte. It is just so soft and yummy!<br />
<br />
I can't wait to see what everyone will make from these yarns!<br />

Wow what a journey the past few months have been. We are so proud to be launching a 100% Australian manufacturing business that supports Australian farming and employment. Starting up a business takes guts, determination, a lot of stubbornness and the willingness to take a risk. I think if anyone else tells me that we are "brave" I'll have a not so quiet meltdown in the corner! In any case, Adagio Mills is still very much in its infancy however we are very excited that this will be our very first Australia Day. So in celebration we have decided to do a giveaway competition.<br />

I also managed to finish another knitting project today (shock, horror, I know! I surprised even myself with finishing another project so soon!). Its another Milo, pattern by tiKKi <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/milo-3" target="_blank">here</a> and my project details on ravelry<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/knitnadine/milo-3" target="_blank"> here</a>. I just love this pattern. I really enjoy knitting the cable and it is such a comfy vest for children to wear. When James was 2 years old, his milo vest was the only jumper he would willingly wear!<br />
<br />Nadinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18079891192693518929noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824472309606677335.post-82670864034063217192016-01-02T20:35:00.000+11:002016-01-02T20:35:02.291+11:00A finished project!<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not surprisingly, in the last year I have done a lot of knitting of tension squares but have run out of time and energy for more involved projects! However over the last few months a number of my friends have had babies so I have started a few knitted presents and am very excited to announce that I actually managed to finish one! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWbM2zjZoNKf4o7QWHnob_7ZM_ZEkOufCzAyXhgVti679yu5QBKanlf_wS_PG8ZFc2SKZepyErpHNeFrnURAZPIdmotkjBVzOMkj6ZHWudspUevFf8g89rTZySG7FkVkPlNDgEINRA6B8/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWbM2zjZoNKf4o7QWHnob_7ZM_ZEkOufCzAyXhgVti679yu5QBKanlf_wS_PG8ZFc2SKZepyErpHNeFrnURAZPIdmotkjBVzOMkj6ZHWudspUevFf8g89rTZySG7FkVkPlNDgEINRA6B8/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wish I had found this pattern for when my little ones were babies. I loved having knitted clothing for them but always struggled with finding patterns that I liked and that had enough space under their chubby chins. The pattern is Baby Vertebrae by Pekapeka and can be found on Ravelry <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-vertebrae" target="_blank">here</a>. The yarn is odds and ends of two of the yarns that we made for our Kickstarter backers. The colours are natural brown and fawn.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has been a huge year for us with the mill starting and our boys growing by the day! Xavie is somehow managing to be cheeky even without any words and has a magic smile that just makes the whole world smile with him. James is becoming more independent by the minute and loves touching all the yarns I bring home. He is old enough to be interested in what I'm doing so once I've finished the promised baby knitting projects I think I'll involve him in picking the pattern for a jumper or vest for winter next year. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Hmmm perhaps not... Not yet anyway! Loving working with fibre but in these early stages there is more knitting of tension squares than anything else! However I am managing to squeeze in a few rows here and there. In typical form, I don't just have one project on the go, I have three! I'm knitting socks for me with scraps from the mill, a baby vertebrae for my friend's new bub, a milo for a friend's young boy and have plans for a kina for another friend's new bub! I just can't help myself! <div>I'm really enjoying knitting with yarn that not only did we make it but we know the people who grew the fibre. Aren't the colours just lovely?<br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDHB3g5vDz6ht7tx1Ds2OGp5FIho-1a7xZfKmtYuvSx1eCU6P8xgqPiTgY8QYzRnnna2tjthJ1D262yY7wM6XmiwAr7ZO-oXZ3BK8Y0KWBVnBsF3-2V1VNYRdxsOiH_xCwHb9goqQuEPI/s640/blogger-image--426732797.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDHB3g5vDz6ht7tx1Ds2OGp5FIho-1a7xZfKmtYuvSx1eCU6P8xgqPiTgY8QYzRnnna2tjthJ1D262yY7wM6XmiwAr7ZO-oXZ3BK8Y0KWBVnBsF3-2V1VNYRdxsOiH_xCwHb9goqQuEPI/s640/blogger-image--426732797.jpg"></a></div><br></div></div>Nadinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18079891192693518929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824472309606677335.post-57125119808622941322015-11-02T15:15:00.005+11:002015-11-02T15:15:55.490+11:00Simple Coconut Yoghurt<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst our household loves cheese and yoghurt, sadly at least two of us are cows milk protein intolerant so cheese and yoghurt aren't such a great idea. I've made a few substitutes along the way, most recently with almond milk in my coffee. I had thought that I had "grown" out of my allergy however since not even having cows milk in my coffee this winter I have been more well than I can remember for a very long time, even with two small boys fermenting bugs! The hardest for our family is for our 4 year old. He loved cheese and yoghurt before we discovered his intolerance and just couldn't understand why he couldn't have it anymore. So it was with great joy that I realised that it is possible to make coconut yoghurt! At the time we couldn't buy it from the local supermarket so with much internet research we gave it a go. I was astounded by how complicated the instructions were! I have a few versions a go with many failed attempts. Throughout the failed attempts I just kept thinking, it can't be this hard!!! So I decided to give super simple a go. It worked! My boy absolutely loves it! He is so happy to be eating yoghurt that he doesn't even realise, or doesn't care that, he isn't eating the ones he used to eat.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A word of warning through. There is good reason for some parts of the complicated versions, including bringing the coconut milk up to a high temperature to kill the unwanted bacteria. However it is so simple that we only make a small amount at a time and it is nearly always eaten within 24hrs of it being cool enough in the fridge!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So my simple version is...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqBy_axpBN2yxS2RZWbGACBkDNeAPurOnlnxzNe4ZrmLC4cdRU3iJhyphenhyphenF4nWX0w-Iy1dJkPricK-fu-Q7T13VDBEy1ePI6xdmvO4JjyMI0HlD8Y60pjDfJJeyaA8NXwnRseh-5BCi7cnVA/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqBy_axpBN2yxS2RZWbGACBkDNeAPurOnlnxzNe4ZrmLC4cdRU3iJhyphenhyphenF4nWX0w-Iy1dJkPricK-fu-Q7T13VDBEy1ePI6xdmvO4JjyMI0HlD8Y60pjDfJJeyaA8NXwnRseh-5BCi7cnVA/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="316" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1-2 tins of coconut milk (I use the Ayam 270ml tins, just because we like it, we can get it easily and seems to be free of additives)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1-2 capsules of dairy free probiotics (I use Inner Health Plus Dairy Free)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2-3T maple syrup (this is not for our flavouring, this is for the probiotic bacteria food)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Put all ingredients in to the Easiyo container then follow directions of your Easiyo maker with regards to water level in the thermos. Leave for 7 hours and transfer to the fridge.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thats it!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It produces a fairly runny yogurt but no one cares in this household! I have added agar agar to thicken but it requires too much heating and fuss for us. If I want a thicker yoghurt I'll often add a tin of coconut cream instead of milk, which seems to be fine for us. Time in the thermos and if we add 1 or 2 capsules of probiotics helps us adjust how sour we want the yoghurt. (longer time = more sour)<br />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwlNArHG4cpYDW6yICWdQmEUySI9pO28q5vBrHrSu-cnM2zj8Y661uqlHbWIec9Lutwir7eYCkIUrHvyHCbGg0wgwsW56rbUg5Tj0yIDsBJZJHdSUoffcstgUDjriXG-iiGIWaAe_UNBo/s1600/IMG_2962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwlNArHG4cpYDW6yICWdQmEUySI9pO28q5vBrHrSu-cnM2zj8Y661uqlHbWIec9Lutwir7eYCkIUrHvyHCbGg0wgwsW56rbUg5Tj0yIDsBJZJHdSUoffcstgUDjriXG-iiGIWaAe_UNBo/s320/IMG_2962.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also by accident made a really nice strawberry frozen yoghurt (we call it strawberry icecream here, was actually attempting a smoothie at the time!). 500g frozen strawberries and some (maybe a cup) of the yoghurt ground up together on speed 9 in the thermomix. Yum!</div>

So I'm really enjoying that Xavie fell asleep on the trip home from the shops today and we were able to park the car in a nice spot for me to sit with him whilst Andrew takes James for a while to do boy things. The next photo is my knitting and my view!<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga7lDmOTJs_wQFRYnrg5XH1FQID8iOsz3TxmpGuC7qCWMqfcnj6Gx5NbDvsfgobVZiIcDYHDJcTVBK1MQz_4Jzc8KvamDrtcMvNGrJG-rvCaSN8tHE7xVarG42nvbzNGWR_n6MIgx6oBQ/s640/blogger-image-513959513.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga7lDmOTJs_wQFRYnrg5XH1FQID8iOsz3TxmpGuC7qCWMqfcnj6Gx5NbDvsfgobVZiIcDYHDJcTVBK1MQz_4Jzc8KvamDrtcMvNGrJG-rvCaSN8tHE7xVarG42nvbzNGWR_n6MIgx6oBQ/s640/blogger-image-513959513.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I'm attempting knitting with the magic loop technique with our official batch 1 of adagio yarn! It's been a long time coming with temperature and humidity causing us dramas. (Who thought it was a bright idea to start a fibre mill in the middle of Orange in winter? Oh dear, that's right... Us... Hmmmm. Anyway...) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Today is the first patch of sun we have had for a week so the alpacas are thoroughly enjoying themselves sunning their tummies!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It always gives me a bit of a heart attack seeing them in the paddock like that but they love it! The photo is not great quality but you might be able to see Julie, our white alpaca, sunning her tummy in the background. Also in the photo is Ebony and her cria Onyx in the foreground. She surprised us with him last weekend. We had been wondering but didn't really think she was pregnant but clearly she was! He was very small and born in the middle of terrible weather but he is feeding well and seems to be going strong which is a relief!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo5clTpEc0-jDMtkUId7VFQecEXQxJqkQqnJg1wdAykR4r94FbatDzFP-Kqgnx1eIgvpmayCIQgw6QL0p8BAyH651qzjDXoGRDPvMu16997Nj8THs0oMGDYUQ6fKWPIGr2CVBUxsZum0I/s640/blogger-image--633453794.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo5clTpEc0-jDMtkUId7VFQecEXQxJqkQqnJg1wdAykR4r94FbatDzFP-Kqgnx1eIgvpmayCIQgw6QL0p8BAyH651qzjDXoGRDPvMu16997Nj8THs0oMGDYUQ6fKWPIGr2CVBUxsZum0I/s640/blogger-image--633453794.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">On yet another snow day this week we even had a lamb born! Her third black female cria was born this afternoon! I had been watching her all day worrying about her as she was really uncomfortable. In late afternoon I had assumed it wouldn't be today as it was getting too late but when I went to feed them snacks gedalyn didn't come to investigate which was very unusual. She is usually the first to the food! Then I found her on her side and was about to call the vet when two feet appeared! A very short time later the little female cria was born. It was wonderful to watch! We had missed all the other births on our property. It was also interesting to watch the other alpacas greet the new arrival. They each greeted her but the matriarch of the group, Julie, paid the most attention and stood protector over her whilst mum, gedalyn, rested. They form the most wonderful bonds.<div>The photo is of later this evening just before I caught the cria to check it and put a coat on her. <br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz_5KEv5-xqJPpaj5PxawXuOIOBnejkydFhe_28VT9aZ7pGOMZc32yv56uiphg9iMlbAV4uUpow1-p2XRTSlvqDy12qOSi3VuwdRXhcOBbnHoqft097ZQKtMUQIbaJGXPEqGDV2_-SJeA/s640/blogger-image-1830776147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz_5KEv5-xqJPpaj5PxawXuOIOBnejkydFhe_28VT9aZ7pGOMZc32yv56uiphg9iMlbAV4uUpow1-p2XRTSlvqDy12qOSi3VuwdRXhcOBbnHoqft097ZQKtMUQIbaJGXPEqGDV2_-SJeA/s640/blogger-image-1830776147.jpg"></a></div><br><div><br></div></div></div>Nadinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18079891192693518929noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824472309606677335.post-19663454175389112762015-05-03T18:57:00.001+10:002015-05-03T18:57:21.098+10:00New cria at adagio!Our first new cria in 2 years was born today! They use a council owned building and we agist the land (approx 3 acres). Most of the time we don't see much of them but every now and then they have a meet and this weekend is one of those times! It was fantastic, today more than 60 antique cars were right next door! They were stunning! Here are a few photos that we took walking around and admiring a few that were left this afternoon.<br />

He has learnt so much and part of what worked through whilst he was there was some of Lynn's alpaca fibre as a bit of a test! This is what he created!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="p1">
Alpaca fibre has such beautiful colours and blending the fleece from a few alpacas can create something really unique. When choosing the colours to use for my training here I thought it would be interesting to capture the change as the fleece was blended through the process. So here is the starting point, some brown, black and white huacaya alpaca fleece blended with a little suri grey, lets see what it creates!</div>

Andrew is currently in America, training in one of the top small scale mills there, <a href="http://www.olympicyarnandfiber.com/" target="_blank">Olympic Yarn and Fiber</a>. He is learning so much and has been putting together a story about the yarn he has processed there. It has been posted as a few chapters on our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/adagioalpacamills.com.au" target="_blank">facebook page</a> but I think I'll try to condense it into a story here in a few days time. I had one of those days the other day. I couldn't talk about it at the time but lets just say it involved chasing sheep around the paddock for 1.5hrs (and not getting them where I wanted them!), a sick baby who just wanted hugs and the loss of car keys for about half an hour which was just long enough for me to panic as to how I was going to collect James from preschool. Not to mention the few adagio disasters averted! Lets just say there wasn't enough chocolate in the house to make up for it that evening.</div>

We have confirmation that our milling equipment should arrive in the country on the 3rd of May so I'm really hoping it will clear customs quickly and be on our doorstep early May. To be counting its arrival in days rather than months is equally exciting and scary. So much to do and so little time. I'm getting a very good lesson in working on what I can and not worrying about the rest! </div>

<br />
I'm enjoying our project coming to life and news articles are just one way its gaining momentum. I feel like a kid who had their photo in the paper!<br />
<br />
We've had articles in the Central West Daily but I really love the one in the Dubbo Weekender! Kim Goldsmith (@kvgoldsmith) came to our place and interviewed me. She was lovely and has written a great story!<br />

I love walking around our property at twilight. I don't get to do it often with small children but today the stars aligned and I managed to get out. It is days like today that remind me why we named our property "adagio". Adagio, as an Italian musical term, means restful; at ease and that was just what I needed this afternoon. After trekking two children around from one boy's specialist appointment to a physio appointment for my wrist (that I've damaged cartilage in from carrying my very stocky 6.5month old around for long periods with my wrist in a less than optimal position) and a 3.5 year old with skinned knees that he has decided prevents him from standing, all resulting in less than required sleep for the youngest... I'm sure you've all had days like that! Anyway just wandering around and checking on things meant I cleared my head and am ready to face the world again. </div>

I love our barnevelders but they have been terrible layers for us! Spoilt free loaders at the moment! That rooster is pretty though...</div>

We have a very talented and creative family member who filmed and then pieced together a video of Andrew's trip to Italy. The purpose of the trip was to inspect our now completed milling equipment before it is shipped and learn from the experts whilst he was there. The trip was invaluable, Andrew was able to put the equipment through its paces and test a number of assumptions and questions we had developed along the way. So enjoy the video of his trip, hope you have a good giggle as Andrew learns to spin with our spinner and celebrate with him when gets it working for the first time! </div>
